Spring Clean Your Complexion with These Skin Care Tips
Carol Belanger
Spring is in the air, and as we put away the bulky sweaters and boots, it is also time to evaluate our skin care products. For instance the moisturizer we have used all winter long may be too heavy for the spring and summer months. Furthermore, your winter moisturizer may not contain enough SPF protection for the spring and summer months.
And how about color? Usually our spring and summer wardrobe have a wonderful assortment of different colors. Why not add some color into your makeup bag and introduce new shades of eye shadow, lip tints and blush.
Below are some simple steps to get you glowing for the spring season:
1: Evaluate your moisturizer - Does it contain SPF protection? As the weather gets warmer everyone's complexion tends to get a little oilier. Even if you have a dry or combination skin, you may need a lighter moisturizer. For those with extremely oily skin, keep a few blotting papers in your bag and/or consider Mattifying Gel which will control oily skin for up to eight hours.
2: Exfoliate the whole body - winter months can take a toll on our skin because the skin cells do not rejuvenate as fast, thus leaving behind dry, rough, and scaly skin. Smooth out skin with a whole body exfoliation. Additionally, exfoliation will promote circulation and bring about a natural glow to the skin.
3: Evaluate your skin - Just as you visit the doctor for yearly physicals; it is imperative that you check your skin. Get a skin survey from a dermatologist. The dermatologist will evaluate all moles, freckles, dark spots and variations in skin tone. Most skin cancer is treatable if detected early.
4: Your Skin and food - spring brings a bountiful harvest of fruits and vegetables and offers so much to promote great looking skin. Fruits and vegetables provide antioxidants which fight off free radicals and protects the skin
5: How about this skin care recipe - a hydrating facial mask to relieve winter dryness, below is a simple recipe you can make at home:
Ingredients:
1/2 cup unripe papaya, diced
1 teaspoon plain yogurt
1 teaspoon honey
Combine all ingredients in a food processor and blend. Apply the mask to your face for eight to ten minutes. Then, rinse with cool water and apply a toner to remove all traces of the mask and restore pH balance. Follow with a moisturizer.
6: What about your beauty products? If you are using a hydrating foundation, consider a light dusting powder, bronzer and light lip gloss. For springtime, it is best to keep it simple and fresh. However, ensure that your moisturizer has SPF protection!
7: Be diligent about sun protection - As the weather gets warmer, make sure you're applying sunscreen to all exposed areas 20 to 30 minutes before heading outdoors, and reapplying every two hours. If you don't own a double-duty product already, consider using a facial moisturizer with SPF, thus avoiding applying several layers of lotion on the face.
8: I can relate to this one! Clean out the makeup bag! Does you makeup bag look like a child went through it with their crayons? How many items do you have in you makeup bag and never use? Maybe it is time to spring clean your makeup bag and make room for wonderful spring products.
9: Don't forget feet and hands - Well manicured toes add so much to that pretty sandal! Your hands and feet need extra care to stay smooth and supple.

Oatmeal...not just for breakfast You may be surprised to learn that oatmeal; yes that wonderful cereal we enjoy for breakfast, (or maybe not!), is one of the best natural treatments for dry skin. Plain rolled oats, can be used to make a gentle and very effective natural skin cleanser, facial scrub, and soothing facial mask. An excellent multi-purpose skin care treatment, oatmeal helps to relieve dryness, restoring natural moisture balance to aid in healing minor irritations due to the many causes and sources of skin sensitivities. Minor skin irritations can be caused by sensitivities to the ingredients in skin care products, exposure to chemicals found in household cleaning products, exfoliation with the wrong product, excessive scrubbing or rubbing during the exfoliation process, and many other factors. Cleansing the face with oatmeal helps to soothe skin irritation and reduce discomfort.
Oatmeal, when used as a skin cleanser, actually absorbs and removes surface dirt and impurities while providing very gentle exfoliation, leaving skin smooth, soft, and clean, without soap. As a facial mask, oatmeal deep cleanses pores without irritating and drying out skin. And as a facial scrub, oatmeal gently but effectively removes dead skin cells, to reveal softer, smoother looking skin. In addition, cleansing and exfoliating with oatmeal provides the bonus of a natural, healthy glow.

10 Tips For Choosing Healthy
Cosmetics And Personal Care Products By: Christine Farlow
| The cosmetic and personal care product industry is a multi-billion
dollar a year industry ... and growing. New products are coming
onto the market every day.
Manufacturers play to your emotions in their advertising and
packaging. They tell you their products will make you look more
beautiful, younger, sexier and help you attract your perfect mate.
They promise to erase blemishes, wrinkles, make your skin smoother
and softer. In fact, any flaws that you see in yourself, real or
imagined, there is most likely a product on the market that
promises to fix it.
Can you believe all the claims you read or hear about these
products? Is there really truth in advertising? Where do you find
the answers to these questions? How can you really be sure that a
product will do what the manufacturer says it will? And most
importantly, how do you know that the products are healthy and safe
to use?
Here are some things for you to look out for when choosing
products you’re going to use on your skin:
1. Magazine and other print ads
They're designed to make you want to buy. They promise you radiant
skin, a healthy glow, age-defying skin care, purity, safe and
effective products made with natural ingredients. They make the
product sound so good and good for you that you just want to go out
and buy it. But don't buy yet. You need more information.
2. Radio and TV ads
In 30 seconds or less, you'll hear all the wonderful benefits
you'll receive from choosing their products – softer, silkier,
healthier hair; smoother, younger-looking skin and more.
Manufacturers spend a lot of money trying to convince you to buy
their products. Don't jump up and rush to the store after seeing or
hearing one of their compelling ads. They're not telling you
everything you need to know.
3. Celebrity endorsements
Companies pay celebrities a lot of money to endorse their
products. They hope you'll think that because the celebs say
wonderful things about their products, you'll want to use them too.
Don't fall for this.
4. Samples in the mail
What better way to get you to try their product than to give you a
little bit to test on yourself? You get to experience first hand
how the product smells, feels, lathers, absorbs, etc. Now while you
may like how it smells, performs and the result you get, you still
don't have enough information to assess the health and safety of
the product.
5. "Natural" on the label
This suggests that the product is made of ingredients from natural
sources. However, there are no industry standards for what
"natural" means. The product may contain all natural ingredients,
just a few natural ingredients added to a synthetic product or no
natural ingredients at all.
6. "Organic" on the label
Beware of products that claim to be 95%, 90% or some other high
percentage organic on the label. According to cosmetic chemist Paul
Lieber, it's physically impossible for more than 30-40% of the
ingredients to be organic, unless it's organic oil. Why? Because
typically 60-70% of a product is water and water cannot be
certified organically grown, even if it's distilled or processed
with organic herbs or essential oils.
7. Hypoallergenic
This doesn't mean the product won't cause allergic reactions.
There are no standards defining hypoallergenic. It just means the
manufacturer believes it's less likely to cause allergic reactions.
In many cases, it's not even tested; only fragrances are
removed.
8. Pretty labels
Manufacturers spend a lot of money designing labels to make you
think their product is natural, herbal, healthy and will do amazing
things if you use it. The truth is ... the information on the front
of the label doesn't tell you anything about the health and safety
of the ingredients inside the package. Don't base your decision on
what's on the front of the label.
9. The ingredients list
This is the most important piece of information that you
absolutely must read before you buy any product. The ingredient
list is where you find out if the product really contains safe and
healthy ingredients or not. This is not what the manufacturers
wants you to read on their labels. That's why they make it so tiny
you need a magnifying glass to read it. Buy one and carry it with
you in your pocket or purse. Take it out when you're trying to read
that microscopic print.
10. Incomplete ingredient lists
Many companies, because of increased consumer awareness of the
ingredients in skin care products will list only the known herbal
and healthy ingredients on their website or in their
advertisements. If you don't read carefully, you may think that
what they list is the complete list of ingredients in the product
... that is until you buy the product and read the full list of
ingredients on the label. Beware of this deceptive practice.
Now, you may be wondering how you're supposed to know if the
ingredients on the label are safe or not. Most of the ingredients
are not listed in plain, understandable, everyday language. Well,
you don't need to hire your own personal cosmetic chemist. There is
a simple solution. Dying To Look Good is an easy-to-use book,
written in plain, understandable language, that classifies
ingredients in cosmetics and personal care products according to
safety and lists products that are safe and healthy to use. If you
check the ingredients on all product labels before you buy with the
list of ingredients in Dying To Look Good, you will be able to
confidently choose products that are safe and healthy. |

Five Good Habits to Maintain Our Soft
and Flawless Skin By Ivan Cuxeva Jr The following good habits are Actually shared by most
dermatologists as their best advices for a clear
complexion. Good Habit #1: Avoid Too Many
Cosmeceuticals Numerous experts have said that with more and more beauty
potions with alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs), antioxidants, salicylic
acids, and retinoids in them, blending a cleanser from one line
with a scrub or daytime moisturizer from another, then a night
cream from yet another can lead to over-exfoliation as well as
irritation. This can no doubt add up to a real dilemma, especially
for those women who have olive and darker complexions. This is also
possible for women who are more prone to discoloration when their
skin is irritated. So, to play it really safe, it is important that
you only stick with one line of products. But, only use the line of
products which are formulated to work together. It is often said
that if for instance you use any prescription products like the
famous Renova, the advice of your dermatologist is highly needed.
Ask your specialist regarding on how to mix prescription treatments
with the over the counter cosmeceutical products. Just don’t overdo
beauty products. Good Habit #2: Consider a Healthy
Exercise Exercise is great for a beautiful skin. So, considering at
least twenty to thirty minutes of any aerobic exercise is worth
trying. It will give you a glow, as it is often said. One of the
supports for this is the fact that exercise boosts blood flow. It
is this increased blood flow which will bring more nutrients to the
skin. However, it is important to be aware that the accumulation of
sebum or oil through perspiration can result in sweatband acne,
folliculitis, as well as spiky heat. But, don’t worry; there is a
simple solution for this – shower as soon as possible after shaking
your booty. Good Habit #3: Intimate with the
Phone? Don’t Be! Always note that constant rubbing on the mouthpiece
may lead to rashes around the chin and mouth. This is what many
people have believed, including dermatologists. So, it is important
that when talking to somebody on the phone, hold the phone away
from those mentioned areas when talking. Also, clean the phone
often with a mild soapy solution or perhaps rubbing
alcohol. Good Habit #4: Examine Your Birthday
Suit for Spots When it comes to skin care, any sudden or suspicious-looking
mole, bump or other growth on the skin is a reason to see a
dermatologist. Nevertheless, as skin cancer rates skyrocketed,
having a full body check up by a professional is very crucial. This
is especially true for those us living in the baby-oil-and-iodine,
pre-sunscreen generation. Also, it is said that those who belong in
a high risk group, meaning having a personal or family history of
skin cancer, a lot of moles, fair skin, or light eyes or hair,
should consult a specialist for a regular check up. The regular
examination should start in their teens and probably no later than
age 35. However, even if you do not belong in a high risk group, it
is still recommended that between the ages of 20 and 40, people
must have a cancer-related check up. The check up must include skin
exam and must be considered every three to four years. Once you hit
your 40s, start undergoing a cancer-related examination with skin
exam every year. Aside from that, it is advisable that you do
monthly self-exams in order for you to keep an eye out for changes
and growths. Good Habit #5: Eat Healthy
Foods Healthy foods refer to those that help your skin and body
fight against the bad forces outside and inside. You must consider
antioxidants such as vitamin A, C and E as they are highly potent
for sun damage and fight certain cancers, including skin cancer.
This is actually the reason that makes antioxidants essential to
your health. Along with this, a well balanced diet is highly
recommended. This means making yourself comfortable with a diet
filled with at least five servings a day of fruits and vegetables,
plus a multivitamin that meets the RDA standards. Back to Top |

Summer Skin Survival GuideDon't let itches, blisters,
breakouts, or burns sabotage your summer Blisters How to Avoid Them: Severe sunburn and tight
clothing can cause blisters, but most often the culprits are shoes,
so wear a sensible pair. Ha! As if! OK, then. Attaching a small
piece of moleskin to the areas of your feet that rub against the
most carnivorous parts of your shoes will help. Try Dr. Scholl’s
Moleskin Plus Padding ($6 at drugstores), which can be cut to
size. Once You’ve Got Them: An
adhesive bandage will stop the friction and create padding (blister
bandages are a good option). If you don’t have one, lubricate the
area with hand lotion or Vaseline to help the shoe glide over the
painful spot. When you get home, soak your feet in a bath of Epsom
salts and warm water for 20 to 30 minutes. “If there is fluid in
the blister, the salt will draw it out,” says Cary Zinkin, a
podiatrist in Deerfield Beach, Florida. Apply an antibiotic
ointment, like Neosporin, and put a gauze bandage over the blister
to keep the medicine in and bacteria out.
Heat Rash How to Avoid It: Heat rash, also known as
prickly heat, occurs when sweat becomes trapped under the skin. The
tiny red bumps feel prickly and often itch, explains Ava Shamban, a
dermatologist in Santa Monica. (The blockages also disrupt the
cooling effects of sweating and can, in extreme conditions,
contribute to heat exhaustion.) To prevent heat rash, use an
exfoliant or a washcloth a couple of times a week in the shower to
slough off dead skin cells, and try to stay cool and dry. Once You’ve Got It:
If you do develop heat rash, apply Sarna Lotion ($10,
www.drugstore.com), a soothing lotion with camphor and menthol; or
a 1 percent hydrocortisone cream. You can also take a lukewarm bath
with a handful of colloidal (milled) oatmeal or a product that
contains oatmeal, such as Aveeno Skin Relief Bath Treatment ($7 at
drugstores). With treatment, the bumps should disappear in two to
three days. Sunburn How to Avoid It: You know the drill, but every
summer you forget at least once and wind up with a sunburn. Here’s
another reminder: Use a high-SPF sunscreen, limit sun exposure, and
don’t forget to reapply! Once You’ve Got It:
Taking ibuprofen pills, such as Motrin or Advil, will treat the
pain and reduce the inflammation. So will refrigerated aloe gel,
which creates a protective barrier over skin. Try Banana Boat
Soothing Aloe After Sun Gel ($5 at drugstores) or Propoline After
Sun Body Spray With Aloe & Chamomile ($16, www.drugstore.com).
“A wet washcloth that has been placed in the freezer for 10 minutes
will also help,” says Zoe Draelos, a dermatologist in
Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Peeling usually occurs a few days
after a bad burn, but “don’t pick!” says Renee Snyder, a
dermatologist in Austin, Texas. “When you pull skin off before it’s
ready, you risk causing scars.” Written by Elizabeth Schatz Passarella July 2006 |
Natural Ways to Treat Stretch Marksby Lori Stryker, B.Sc., B.H.Ec.,
B.Ed. Apr 27, 2007 Pregnancy is a wonderful time in a woman's life. One aspect
of child-bearing, however, may not be so welcomed. For 75-90% of
pregnant women, stretch marks, or striae gravidum, can appear in
the later half of pregnancy. Stretch marks do not pose any health
risk to either the mother or child, but can cause anxiety over
their appearance for those who develop them. Stretch marks first appear as raised striations which vary in
colour from pink, purple or brown, depending on the mother's normal
skin colour. Striations develop where fat is stored in the body,
such as the abdomen, thighs, hips, buttocks, breasts and arms.
Stretch marks develop during pregnancy because of rapid and
excessive weight gain in areas such as the lower abdomen or
thighs. As weight increases, the collagen and elastin in the dermal
layer of the skin, responsible for retaining shape and firmness, is
stretched to the point of breaking. The dermis is the layer beneath
the epidermis, or visible layer of the skin. The elastic fibres in
the dermis weaken with stretching and increased cortisone levels
normally produced in the last trimester. As these fibres separate
and the skin stretches, collagen is overproduced to form scar
tissue which result in striations. There is no cure for stretch marks. The scarring process that
has occurred in the dermis cannot be reversed, but stretch marks
will flatten, fade and lighten over time. Creams which contain
steroids such as hydrocortisone, or active agents like tretinoin
(retin-A) should not be used during pregnancy, and especially not
during the first trimester when the fetus is highly vulnerable.
Plastic surgery methods are available to reduce the appearance of
stretch marks, such as dermabrasion or laser, but treatments are
expensive and results vary. Genetics play a role in whether a
pregnant woman will develop stretch marks, but equally influential
factors are the condition of the skin and nutrition in determining
the onset and severity of stretch mark development. Well-hydrated and healthy skin stretches more easily, so
drinking plenty of fluids and eating foods rich in vitamin C,
vitamin E, zinc and silica, a component in collagen formation, are
beneficial. Lotions, creams and other topical treatments will not
reach the dermis, but they can help relieve the itchiness or
dryness associated with stretch marks. Keeping the skin moisturized
decreases any discomfort that may be felt and if stretch marks are
treated when they first appear, their appearance may be reduced
significantly. Massaging nutrient-rich natural oils such as wheatgerm,
jojoba or vitamin E can help heal the epidermis and also increase
blood circulation to the affected area, assisting the healing
process. Pregnant women should avoid products containing clary
sage, basil, cinnamon or thyme, as these might adversely affect the
fetus. Stretch marks eventually fade and become less obvious over
time. Maintaining a balanced perspective about stretch marks can
keep pregnancy a most precious time for mother and baby. |

The Healing Mineral BathBy Iris J Chapman
A mineral bath is a body of water that contains beneficial amounts
of nutrients that your body needs to stay healthy. Soaking in a
mineral bath helps detoxify you and balance your pH level thus
allowing the body to heal itself of whatever may be ailing it.
It doesn't matter whether you are a man or a woman you need a
regular body detox. A daily routine of a home mineral bath, plus
using complimentary home and personal products that work together
in a systematic approach to help cleanse your body, both inside and
out, and rid it of unhealthy toxins, is a must.
Soaking in a mineral bath is the best and simplest way to detox
your body on a daily basis and get the much needed nutrients the
body requires to stay youthful and healthy because the warm water
easily penetrates your skin allowing the nutrients to be easily
absorbed into your system. In the same way, toxins are easily
purged from the body and left in the water.
Every mineral bath, no matter what aromatherapy essential oils,
herbs or other ingredients you add, should start with two (2)
ounces of energizing mineral bath and one ounce of moisturizing
mineral soap. Adding essential oils are powerful healing agents and
not just enjoyable scents. To get the maximum results you need
authentic aromatherapeutic products. Aromatherapy oils are
stronger, purer and more effective than perfume oils.
The temperature of the mineral bath plays an important role in the
healing treatments. The ideal water temperature, most of the time,
is 95 degrees F to 104 degrees F: it matches the body's natural
temperature.
Very hot water, 100 degrees F to 104 degrees F, opens the pores and
encourages a detoxifying sweat, stimulates the lymph system and
relaxes muscle spasms. Hot baths should be brief and always
followed by a cool shower to restore natural body temperature and
close the pores.
Cool mineral baths, 90 degrees F to 95 degrees F, are recommended
during pregnancy and make excellent recovery baths for
convalescents. Generally speaking, bathing is drying. After every
bath, a good skin moisturizer, applied from head to toe is a must.

How To Prepare An Herbal BathFor Therapeutic Or Beauty
Purposes By Mary Hanna
For centuries herbal baths have been used for therapeutic or beauty
purposes. The Egyptians made good use of a therapeutic herbal bath.
Cleopatra is said to have bathed in milk and the flowers from herbs
to keep her skin smooth and moist. Romans had community herbal
baths, the forerunner to the modern spa. In strict Jewish faiths,
women use a communal herbal bath to cleanse their bodies after
menstruation. There are many benefits to taking herbal baths for
therapeutic purposes, but the added benefit is that an herbal bath
is relaxing too. Here are some guidelines for taking herbal baths.
It is best to wait two hours after you have eaten. It would be
great if you could take it before breakfast but since our lives are
so busy it is more practical to take you herbal bath before you are
going to go to sleep. The temperature of the herbal bath is
important. There is no single temperature that is right; it depends
on what you prefer. Never have it too hot or too cold. As you soak
you can add more hot water as needed. Make sure you are in a well
ventilated room that has no drafts. It is best to get out of the
tub after the water has cooled a bit.
Set the mood of the room by lighting candles and playing some
soothing music. Once you have dried off you can go to bed and get a
good nights sleep. Try to take these therapeutic herbal baths at
least three times per week. It is not recommended that the frail
and infirm use the bath tub. If you have trouble moving your joints
it is not advisable to use herbal baths.
Herbal baths are good for many ailments including arthritis,
tension or stress, constipation and gout. There are many
aromatherapists that use essential oils instead of herbs but there
is no proof that one is better than the other.
There is also no hard rule in what kind of herb you use. I am
including a standard recipe but feel free to experiment with your
own recipes and herbs.
There are two ways to prepare an herbal bath. One method is to make
an infusion; simply steep about one half cup of the herb or herbs
in two cups of boiling water for ten to twenty minutes. The second
way is to fill a porous bag or use an old stocking to put the herbs
in. Hang the bag over the spigot so that the water will flow thru
into the tub. For a stronger bath you can use both methods. Use
fresh herbs for the most benefit.
Another beneficial idea for baths is bath salts. But don’t buy the
expensive gift sets, make the salts yourself. By making them at
home you can save at least fifty percent and in some cases even
more.
Have fun experimenting with your herbs and take advantage of the
benefits of herbal baths.

Common Skin Care MythsBy Marcia Cox
With an increasing emphasis on beauty and age defiance in North
American society, everyone seems to be seeking ways to make
themselves appear younger by taking better care of their skin.
While it is true that skin is one of the keys to a healthy,
youthful appearance, not all skin care treatments that are
proposed, or even that are popular, are effective. Here are some of
the top myths when it comes to skin care.
1) Acne. Acne is the bane of everyone from their teenage years and
onward. There are so many false rumors out there concerning acne
that an article could be written on them alone. To start with, acne
does not cease miraculously when you are out of your teens. In some
people, acne is a perpetual problem and will continue throughout
their lives. Many of the false ideas about acne are extremely
detrimental to people who are afflicted with the condition. Acne is
not a sign that an individual does not wash their face. In fact,
many individuals with acne will be told this by their peers and the
result will be extremely counter-productive; they end up washing
their faces too much. The dryer skin does not clear out the acne
problem, instead it exacerbates it. Acne may be aggravated by
certain foods in an individual’s diet, but rarely are the “suspect
foods” (chocolate, French fries, or pizza) the main trigger.
Finally, remember that acne can be treated by several types of
medicine on the market today-and effectively- so it is all right to
go to your doctor and consult her about acne treatments.
2) Tanning. Tanning is often advertised as adding a warm, healthy
glow to your skin. The truth is, nothing is worse for your skin
than direct exposure to the harmful ultraviolet rays that are
necessary to tan, whether you are on a bed or in the sun. Tanning
may help to get rid of formed acne, but it will not prevent new
pores from clogging. Tanning has little benefits beyond immediate
aesthetic appeal, and in the long run it will prove harmful to your
skin. It is best to use sun block whenever you are out in the
sun.
3) Moisturizers. Many people think that moisturizers will help in
making their skin appear more youthful by getting rid of wrinkles.
This is not the case. Moisturizers will help to lubricate the skin
and lessen dryness, but they will not serve to repair the
microscopic damage at the cell level that wrinkles represent.
4) Skin Care ingredients. For many years, top beauticians have
placed slices of cucumber over the eyes of their clients in order
to reduce skin damage and swelling. Today, you will find many
products on the shelves that depict a cucumber or slice of cucumber
and claim to include cucumber extracts that will help rejuvenate
your skin. The fact is that it is not any particular mineral in the
cucumber that is beneficial to the skin, it is the fact that
cucumbers are mostly made of water, which leeches into the skin
during the process and gives the appearance of re-invigoration.
All of these myths are used today to help sell products via a
method known as scare tactics. In fact, if you follow the advice of
your doctor most of your skin care needs will be resolved, and they
will not require a lot of home grown methods and wives tale
rumors.

How Does Oil & Dirt
Get Washed Away With Soap?By George Grant
We use soap each day in our lives in the form of detergents,
shampoo, shower crème, hand soap or bar soap. We are so used to
using soap that we rarely stop and wonder how this wonderful
compound manages to help us clean ourselves day after day. Have you
ever thought about what would happen if there were no soap? How
else can we rid the dirt off our bodies or our clothes?
Most of the time, dirt comes in the form of grease or oil which
sticks itself onto surfaces and will not come off if only water is
just used. This is because oil and grease are non-polar, which
means that the oil molecules are not charged and therefore are not
attracted to polar substances such as water. Because of this, oil
tends to stick with its own molecules or other non-polar
substances.
On the other hand, water is a polar substance which is made up of
one positive and one negative charge, and therefore is a fragmented
substance. With this, water dissolves salt easily because salt is
made up of charged ions in which the positive charge will be
attracted to the negative ions in water.
Due to the fact of the nature of oil and water, you will see that
oil will not dissolve in water but remain clustered on the surface.
Also, oil and grease will stick onto plates and cutlery during
cleaning, and no amount of water can completely remove it. That’s
when soap comes in. All it takes is just one layer of soap with
water and the oil will be removed. How does this happen?
Well, soap is a unique substance of potassium fatty acid salts,
produced through a chemical reaction called saponification. Its
molecules are made up of a hydrocarbon chain, which is non-polar,
as well as a carboxylate molecule which is polar. Therefore, the
non-polar part of the soap – the hydrocarbon chain, is not
attracted to water but to oil (lipophilic). On the other hand, the
carboxylate molecules which are negatively charged, are attracted
to the positively charged water molecules (hydrophilic).
In this case, when soap is applied to oil and grease, the
lipophilic parts of soap will attach itself to the non polar
molecules of oil. However, the other component of soap, the
hydrophilic component, will be left on the surface. When water is
applied onto this surface with a sponge, the hydrophilic component
will be attracted to the water molecules and is lifted from the
surface, together with the oil. This way, both oil and soap is
removed with the wipe of the sponge. At the same time, because soap
molecules have been combined with oil, other soap molecules will
also be attracted to it. This is why you can see clusters of oil
that are surrounded by soap within the water that has been used for
washing. Of course, once soap has been used up to attract the oil,
more soap would need to be added to work on the access oil.
In conclusion, our lives have been made cleaner and easier through
the wonders of a simple substance called soap. Without it, we would
be having a difficult time removing dirt, oil and grease in our
everyday cleaning.

How To Maintain Your Beautiful
Hands To Look Your Best By: Ronald Yip
| Give Yourself a Hand if you want to maintain a youthful look at any
age and maintaining beautiful hands is important for maintaining a
youthful look. Your hands get the most exposure and show your age
the most, so care of them is care for your age.
The best way to make sure your beautiful hands look best and that
you, in turn, look your youngest and best is to maintain your hands
like the way you care for your age.
As you enter your 20’s, your beautiful hands look young and
healthy for the most part. This is your skin’s glory years as it is
likely yours overall.
While in your 20’s you do not have to worry about any aging
effect, it is also the best time to start preventing the effects of
aging. Premature aging is most often caused by exposure to the sun.
In your 20’s is the best time to begin protecting your hands. At
least twice a day, use a moisturizer with an SPF of at least 15.
UVA rays are what cause brown spots and wrinkles. So if you are
going to be outdoors in the sun for long periods of time, apply a
sunscreen with a UVA blocking agent in it.
Exfoliate the skin on your hands about once a week by using a
facial scrub. Removing old dead skin will help the daily
moisturizer you are applying to penetrate deeper into your skin.
Finally, apply an over the counter lightening skin ream nightly to
your hands. This will fade minor brown spots and discoloration that
may already be infiltrating the skin on your hands. Beware, though,
if you are not using your sunscreen, the spots will reappear. A
rolling stone gathers no moss.
Your estrogen levels will begin to drop as you enter your 30’s.
This drop will cause more dryness in your hands than you
experienced in your 20’s. In addition, this is the time when the
first signs of photo aging may occur (loss of tone in your skin or
blotchiness).
There are still steps you can take. When you get up each morning,
apply a moisturizing cream with a sloughing agent (lactic acid,
glycolic acid, or salicylic acid). This will help to keep dead
cells from accumulating on your skin’s surface. After you
moisturize you will need to layer on the sunscreen. Again, the
sunscreen should have an SPC of at least 15 and contain either
transparent zinc oxide or Parasol 1789. You can also apply an
emollient serum to the backs of your hands about a half an hour
before you go to bed will help prevent the tendency to lose
moisture during the night.
Lastly, apply a prescription bleaching cream (see your
dermatologist) in the morning and then some sort of vitamin A
derivative in the evening to fade out any brown spots that have
begun to show.
As you reach your 40’s you skin will begin to thin out, which is a
normal part of aging due to a loss of collagen in the skin. You
will begin to notice more veins, wrinkles, and sun spots on your
hands (if any of them look strange or change shape or color, see a
dermatologist).
In your 40’s you will want to change to a hand cream that contains
whey protein, which has been shown to help the production of
collagen. Also as always, don’t forget to put on a layer of UVA/UVB
blocking sunscreen. In an effort to help produce collagen as you
sleep, apply a nonprescription retinol cream or Renovo. You may
have to resort to in-office dermatological procedures if serious
wrinkles and spots continue to appear on your hands, And always
consult your doctor before making any decision about serious
treatments.
Many of these procedures can help reverse some of the effects of
aging that all the measures discussed simply cannot prevent. It is
your face that probably gets noticed first, but your hands get the
most exposure: the most exposure to people, the sun, and the
elements. Because of that exposure, your hands are what is going to
display your age.
By taking proper care of your hands you will be able to look your
best, and maybe even look younger than you thought you could. So
take care of your beautiful hands, no matter what your age, and
enjoy the benefits. | About the

Indoor Tanning Your Safer
Alternative to the Sun By: Linda Moore
| Whether you are trying indoor tanning for the first time to get
ready for a vacation or to keep your summer tan all year long,
there are rules that should be followed. These rules are necessary
for your safety as well as for your health. Many people visit
tanning salons thinking that they do not present the same health
risks as tanning in the sun. While the risks are less, they are
still there.
The traditional tanning salon depends upon the use of a tanning bed
to produce a tan for a customer. This process is known to expose
the body to the harmful UVA rays and can cause skin cancer. If you
are going to use this method of indoor tanning, use a lotion with
an SPF of not less than 8, but not more than 15.
Because of the dangers of traditional indoor tanning, and the fact
that people still want to maintain a tan throughout the winter, the
industry has invented some answers. Sunless tanning booths and
sunless tanning products are the most popular choices with
consumers. They are safe, look good and are easily applied.
Sunless tanning booths operate by literally spraying a mist that
contains DHA to create the illusion of a tan. DHA is the same color
additive that is used in cosmetics, it covers the body in a
color-in this case a varying degree of tan. This type of tanning
has had drawbacks when applying color to the feet and hands of a
person, these issues have been addressed and are not a concern in
most tanning salons.
A spray on tan does not last long, approximately 3-5 days. For this
reason, the tanning industry has developed a number of systems that
allow you to perform this procedure in the comfort of your home.
These systems can be found in local stores and salons as well as in
catalogues and online.
Sunless tanning lotions first made their appearance on the market
some time ago. Everyone knows the reputation that these products
had for leaving the skin orange instead of tan. These early
products turned many consumers off to this alternative to sun
tanning. Thankfully, the industry has been working on this
particular problem and has solved it for most people. Be careful,
however, the cheaper lotions may still turn skin orange.
Sunless tanning lotions work in much the same way as the spray
tanners. They coat the skin with a DHA coloring. The biggest
difference is that it is applied by hand and at home. It is
important to carefully follow all of the instructions for use that
are printed on the package. This very important step will help you
avoid elbows, feet and hands that appear darker than the rest of
your body. This type of a tan lasts about the same as the airbrush
solution, about 3-5 days. However, by applying a layer or two
everyday, you can build upon the tan that you are creating.
Therefore, you are able to control how deep the color of the tan
becomes.
Indoor tanning is becoming a safer alternative to lying in the sun.
As the population learns more about the dangers of the sun, they
are looking for their tan from safer methods.

Massage Oil For Massage
TherapyBy Caroline Colby
Massage oil is a great addition to any massage experience. It
enhances not only the relaxing nature of the massage therapy
session, but also adds to the healing benefits of the massage.
The use of massage oil is not a new idea. Homer, Plato, Socrates –
all of these men referenced the use of massage oil as an aid for
pain relief in their writings. Today, pain relief is one reason for
using massage oil. Others include the facilitation of more gliding
massage, skin nourishment, and the promotion of good health in
general.
How do you choose a massage oil for massage therapy? First, choose
an oil that is cold-pressed or expeller-pressed. Both of these have
had the least amount of processing and will last longest. Prevent
them from spoiling by keeping them in a cool place and adding 300
IUs of vitamin E per pint of oil monthly. In addition, essential
oils, or oils that are distilled from various plants, roots, or
seeds) can be added. Seek the aid of a professional to advise on a
good combination.
Some oils to choose from for massage therapy include:
* Sweet almond oil – Anti-inflammatory, light, and good for most
skin types, especially dry skin.
* Apricot kernel oil – Reduces stress, provides balance, and good
for all skin types, especially prematurely aging skin.
* Avocado oil – This is a heavy oil best diluted at a rate of 10%
in a lighter oil.
* Borage oil – Good for eczema and psoriasis, it penetrates,
regenerates, and stimulates.
* Castor oil – A thick sticky oil good for drawing out toxins and
for use on scar tissue. Best used in a poultice.
* Coconut oil – A thick, heavy oil that should be warmed before
use. Good for cracked skin.
* Emu oil – Anti-inflammatory and used for arthritis, sore
muscles, bruising, and eczema. May block pores.
* Grapeseed oil – Non-allergenic and good for all types of
skin.
* Jojoba oil – A penetrating, anti-bacterial oil for eczema and
acne.
* Kukui nut oil – Anti-bacterial, anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory
that is light and has a slight warming effect.
* Olive oil – Has a warming effect and relieves stiffness.
Different skin types will fare better with different types of oil.
As such, it will be a good idea to experiment with different kinds
for massage therapy. If one doesn't work, try another. Also, some
may personally prefer the smell or the effects of one massage oil
to another. The selection of massage oils is pretty wide; so there
is bound to be a preferred one for just about anybody.

What Causes Acne? By: Ivar Rudi | There is no exact cause for acne. There are several factors that
doctors think bring on this problem for many people. One of those
important factors is the hormone level in the body. The hormones
are called androgens and increase in both boys and girls when they
are going through puberty. This is the reason why there are so many
pre teens and teenagers that have to deal with acne get some form
of acne medication to treat it.
Another cause of acne is genetics. If a child has a parent that
had to deal with a lot of acne problems as a child, then chances
are they will too. When a pre teen or teenager sees that they are
having a problem with acne, it is important for them to seek acne
medication to help fight this problem early so that there are no
long term affects of the acne.
One factor that can cause acne in girls is their menstrual period.
This is a time when hormones are really active and this can cause a
flare up of problems in most pre adolescent girls. There are many
acne medications that can treat this problem and get their skin
looking perfect again over a time period. It will take time for the
skin to clear up and get back to normal.
Pregnancy and birth control pills are another reason why women get
acne. When a woman is pregnant this is a time when her hormones are
changing and all different things are happening to her body. Birth
control pills are another source that will cause women to have an
acne problem and have to resort to acne medication.
Certain medications that people have to take can also cause acne
to occur in certain people. This is typically normal and can affect
just about anyone. Usually once the body accepts the medications
the acne will stop or at least lessen. There are acne medications
to help when this is the case.
Certain fabrics as well can cause acne to appear also. Wearing
tight collars, backpacks, and hats can bring on a case of acne on
any part of the body. That is another factor; acne can be on any
part of the body. It is not just limited to the face. When acne
appears on different parts of the body, you may be able to control
it with over the counter medicine or you may have to go to a doctor
for your acne medications.
There are many myths of way acne starts, like chocolate or greasy
foods. However, there are no actual links to these rumors and it is
not proven. However, in some cases a person’s diet will affect
their skin and that it why it is important to have a healthy well
balanced diet so that you do not need acne medications in the
future. | About the

Remove Unwanted Hair on Your
Body By: James Hunt | Do you have unwanted hair on your body or
ladies are you just tired of shaving your legs. Well here is an
invention to save your life! Hair Removal! There are two types of hair removal. Permanent and semi permanent.
There are also two different main ways to perform these acts.
Waxing:
Waxing can be done at home or professionally at your local beauty
salon. Waxing can be done with heated wax or with a cooled down
formula. During most waxes you apply one to two layers of the wax
and you wait anywhere from five minute to one hour. After you wait
session you can remove the wax one of two ways, wipe off with a
cloth or put on the 'wax strips' that are included in many kits.
You stick on and rip off.
Laser Hair Removal:
Laser Hair Removal is just like the name says they take a laser
very precisely remove any hair that you tell them is no longer
wanted.
There are risks to anything you do to your body and this is no
different. While waxing is a non permanent solution it is safer
than its naboring idea laser hair removal that is very
permanent.
There are always other ways of getting rid of unwanted hair, such
as:
Nair: Nair similar to waxing is a formula that works up to two
weeks. You apply Nair the same way you would apply a wax. Wipe on
and wipe off. It's that simple!
Shaving: Shaving is done by using a blade to trim the hairs
already out of the skin. This process lasts up to anywhere from one
to four days depending where and how often you shave their.
Really its all about what you think is best for you. Hair removal
can be done anywhere on your body but don't abuse this technology,
remember you are the one who has to live with how you look after

Anti-Aging Strategy: McDonald’s
Knows the Secret By: Barbara Morris, R.Ph.
| Copyright 2006 Barbara Morris, R.Ph.
If you eat fast food, even occasionally, you must admire how
quickly they crank out the stuff. A proven, time-tested system
makes it possible. Every day, in every way, they prepare and serve
every burger and every batch of fries exactly the same way. No
deviation from the system allowed. It works perfectly except when
humans goof up and don’t follow the system.
The "fast food system" can teach us a lot about mastering the aging
process. You can apply it to your own life.
You start with a product (you), develop a system or regimen
(exercise and diet), then every day apply the system to the product
(you). Simple, yes?
Of course, you must first develop the system or regimen that you
want to put the product (you) through each day. Don’t make it
difficult or complicated, just decide on some simple "baby" steps
to take, then start.
Let’s assume you decide there are five basic actions you will take
each and every day to keep you ageless. They could be:
• You eat breakfast with enough protein to keep your appetite in
check until the next meal. No sugary fake "cereals" or excess empty
carbs to upset your blood sugar and create cravings.
• You take vitamin supplements, even if you feel great and think
you don’t need them.
• You make time to exercise, even if you think you don’t have time.
No need for trips to a fitness center; instead, invest in a
treadmill or stationary bike, and put it in front of the TV. Walk
or pedal away while you watch your favorite programs instead of
sitting on the sofa drinking nasty diet soda and wolfing down a bag
of greasy chips.
• You spend 15 minutes reading books or newsletters that teach you
about anti-aging living.
• You drink eight full glasses of water during the day.
It’s a no-brainer You do the five actions of your choice each and
every day. You don’t need to start all five at once. Start with one
thing. Then add another after the first action becomes automatic.
It doesn’t matter if the sky falls, you do it anyway. It becomes a
habit, a regimen or a system – whatever you choose to call it. And
it works.
If you are 30, 40 or 50 and you begin to invest in yourself with a
dedicated system that makes sense to you, I guarantee that by the
time you are 77 (my age) father time will have no claim on your
ageless life. You will feel and function, mentally and physically
as you did 25 years earlier.
Look, you can’t stop the passage of time, but you can develop a
personal anti-aging system that stops "oldness" dead in its tracks.
Take the advice of that wise entertainer, Eubie Blake, who said,
"If I knew I was going to live this long, I would have taken better
care of myself." You have to power to control the aging process.
Stop putting it off. Start your own "fast food system" today!
Remember, it works!
